'American Idol' recap: Steven Tyler issues 'apology' in Texas, returns to normal

Despite the pre-show hype, there were no blockbuster announcements on "American Idol" last night. Just a tongue-in-cheek "apology" issued on behalf of Season 10’s wackiest, and most unpredictable, judge: Steven Tyler. "American Idol would like to apologize for last week’s outrageous behavior by Steven Tyler," the announcement flashed on the TV screen at the start of last night’s show, the fifth audition episode of the new season. "Mr. Tyler has been warned and assures us it will never happen again."

Just seconds later, a new video clip was aired, showing a young Idol hopeful auditioning in Austin, Texas. He introduced himself, and Tyler was amused by his name. "My name is Jake Muck," said the blond-haired kid with the tank top, ripped jeans and baseball cap, who looked like he was getting ready to go skateboarding, or maybe jamming with an emo band. "You know what Muck rhymes with, don't you?" Tyler asked him. "Duck?" he replied, nervously.

"Read my lips!" Tyler snapped back. His next word, which was obvious, was edited out of the clip. So, why did the show start out like this? And why did Ryan Seacrest tease Idol fans on his radio show yesterday, saying there would be a major apology issued by the show's producers? My theories: (1) It was an obvious ploy to boost the ratings, which so far have not been as strong as last season's viewership. (2) It was a way to combat the criticism by some fans that this season's judge panel has been too soft.

And what exactly was last week's outrageous behavior?I'm not sure. The only thing I can remember that was even close to outrageous was Tyler's use of the F-word, which got bleeped out during one broadcast when he was rattling off some senseless rhyme about a duck.He also was a bit flirtatious with a gorgeous 19-year-old contestant, a former Miss Teen U.S.A. winner. And he was practically drooling over a hot Aerosmith fan. That stuff wasn't nearly as controversial as the opening week, when Tyler was flirting with female contestants as young as 15 or 16, and praising one for her very short skirt.
